National Alert Registry is a site that helps you locate registered sexual offenders in your neighborhood. It is a free website with nation-wide coverage. It also provides alerts via email/text message when a registered predator moves into your area. I recommend everyone with children signup for this service.
Just a word of caution. Remember these are the Registered offenders. Only 1 in 4 (25%) obey the law and are registered. That means 3 out of 4 or 75% are not being tracked. Also, remember a lot of child predators have not been caught. On average, if caught they have already committed another eight(8) crimes.
So, what that means is don't let your guard down. You still need to take all the precautions you can. That means:
- Educating your yourself and your child about child predator tricks and how to protect yourself from them.
- Preparing an up-to-date identification for each child and keeping it with you. A means to get it posted on a website is preferred. this will allow law enforcement to get it out quickly. Also a video is much better than a still picture. Videos show how a child talks, walks, smiles, etc. Even if a predator changes their outer appearance it is hard to change habits. Stop Kid Abductions offers a service that teaches you how to take the videos and then stores it for you in a secured warehouse. If you need it you activate the system by calling toll-free number and they post it on their website immediately. It is really a seamless system.
- Prepare a "What to do if my child is missing" checklist. In event of such a tramatice situation, you will not be thinking clearly, so have a plan already developed. See the Stop Kid Abductions website to see a plan.
